60 seconds with Nicolas Nebout, Encore member #6000

We reached 6000 members last week, so to celebrate, we caught up with Nicolas Nebout, member #6000.

Why conduct?

I trained as a cellist and always loved playing orchestral music. But I was feeling a bit frustrated not having the big picture and I felt I had something to say and express about music. Standing on the podium has always felt very natural to me! Also I have always enjoyed managing people and was excited by the added challenge of getting the musicians to feel they are fully part of the creative process.

Best gig ever?

I recently conducted a fundraising concert in aid of UNICEF Syria children appeal. Among musicians were some of the best freelancers and principal players in the UK and we also had the wonderful Sarah Connolly singing the Kindertotenlieder. The evening was moving and inspiring and I feel very lucky to have been part of it. An unforgettable experience!

If you could perform with one musician or band from any era, who would it be, and what would you play?

I have always been a kind of Beethoven groupie. As a kid, my biggest dream was to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic in Beethoven 9! Although I would obviously very much love this, I like the spirit, the history and the sound of British orchestras - which is why I settled in the UK.
